Argument Status in Japanese Verb Sense Disambiguation

چکیده
This research aims to incorporate argument status-based modelling within an otherwise selectional constraint-based system of verb sense disambiguation, to capture effects such as underspecification, surface case alternation and semantic backingoff. The proposed implementation hinges around a description of the general behavioural characteristics of integral complements, complements, middles and adjuncts through a pre-determined weighting schema. On limited evaluation, the resultant system returned an accuracy of over 83%, and was further shown to significantly outperform baseline methods.

The purpose of this study is to disambiguate Japanese compound verbs (JCVs) using two methods: (1) a statistical sense discrimination method based on verbcombinatoric information, which feeds into a first-sense statistical sense disambiguation method, and (2) a manual rule-based sense disambiguation method which draws on argument structure and verb semantics. In evaluation, we found that the ru...
متن کاملLearning-Based Argument Structure Analysis of Event-Nouns in Japanese
Previous work on predicate-argument structure analysis has focused largely on verbs and adjectives. However, to extract richer information from such a sentence as His decision was right, not only the predicate was right but also the noun decision need to be identi ed as an event denoting expression. Here, we call event denoting nouns event-nouns, which refer to events like he decided som...
متن کاملLearning Probabilistic Subcategorization Preference and its Application to Syntactic Disambiguation
This paper proposes a novel method of learning probabilistic subcategorization preference. In the method, for the purpose of coping with the ambiguities of case dependencies and noun class generalization of argument/adjunct nouns, we introduce a data structure which represents a tuple of independent partial subcategorization frames. Each collocation of a verb and argument/adjunct nouns is assum...
متن کاملSemantic Verb Classes in the Analysis of Head Gapping in Japanese Relative Clauses
This paper describes an attempt to identify case gapping instances of Japanese relative clauses, and disambiguate the case slot from which the gapping occurred. The method utilised relies principally on surface syntactic pattern matching, combined with adjunct-based verb classification and minimal semantic analysis of the head. Experimentation produced an 90% accuracy in identifying and disambi...
متن کاملImproving Japanese Zero Pronoun Resolution by Global Word Sense Disambiguation
This paper proposes unsupervised word sense disambiguation based on automatically constructed case frames and its incorporation into our zero pronoun resolution system. The word sense disambiguation is applied to verbs and nouns. We consider that case frames define verb senses and semantic features in a thesaurus define noun senses, respectively, and perform sense disambiguation by selecting th...
